Public Panel Discussion

Confronting Climate Change and poverty with decentralized energy supply
Which role can science play in this process?

07. April 2011, 19:30 – 21:30

Lichthof of the TU Main Building, Strasse des 17. Juni 135, 10623 Berlin

Please register for the Panel Discussion at: conference2011@microenergy-international.com

About 1.7 Billion people worldwide are without access to electricity. To extend the access to energy services areas with low incomes and weak infrastructure in the North and in the South renewable energies play a crucial role. However, innovative solutions – like microenergy systems – need to be adapted to the special conditions in these areas. Field researches show, that energy solutions are mostly technology driven and not linked to the needs, the terms of livelihood and capability of people.

Hence the panel discussion will elaborate which pressing tangible questions need to be answered and how science can contribute to increase the implementation rate of microenergy systems.

Representatives of the international scientific community, the development cooperation and the private sector will also discuss how they can improve cooperation in order to deliver energy services to the poor.

The discussants are:

Prof. Dr. Ottmar Edenhofer confirmed as Opening Key Note Speaker - April 7th 9:00 am

Prof. Dr. Ottmar Edenhofer, Co-Chair of Working Group III of the IPCC, deputy director and chief economist of Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research and Professor for "Economics of Climate Change" at the Technical University Berlin has confirmed to deliver the opening key note speech to the conference.

He emphasizes that the accelerated extension of decentralized renewable energy applications merits high priority in the light of the current crisis of centralized energy supply as well as from a climate protection perspective.

Prof. Edenhofer's research explores the impact of induced technological change on mitigation costs and mitigation strategies, as well as the design of instruments for climate and energy policy. He specializes in the Economics of Atmospheric Stabilization, Social Cost-Benefit Analysis, Sustainability Theory, Economic Growth Theory, Environmental Economics, Welfare Theory and Gereral Intertemporal Equilibrium Theory.

He leads and coordinates several externally funded research projects and has published in numerous scientific journals and has authored a number of books. He is also actively involved in the puplic debate on Climate Change in Germany and at an EU level and has been interviewed for prime time news several times.

Micro Perspectives - Future Perspectives for Energy Supply ?

There are two big global energy challenges:

The energy supply of 1.7 billion people worldwide without access to the electricity grid and other energy infrastructures and the global transition from fossil-fuel-based towards renewable energy systems.

What role can decentralized energy systems play in addressing this challenges? A shift in perspective may provide new answers to this question.

Prof. Ellen Morris confirmed as a keynote speaker

We are pleased to announce, that Prof. Ellen Morris from Columbia University will deliver a keynote speech on our conference.

Ellen Morris is the Director of the Energy Tracks of the Energy and Environment Concentration, and she teaches courses on energy and development. In 2008, Morris co-founded Arc Finance, a non-profit organization that promotes and expands access to financing for modern energy, water and other basic needs to build the income and assets of poor people around the world.

Prior to founding Arc Finance, Morris started Sustainable Energy Solutions (SES) in 1996, a company that focuses on international development, policy analysis, and research on energy issues for national governments, development agencies, foundations, and the private sector. Morris has completed pioneering work in energy and microfinance since 2004 by studying how to link the two sectors to meet the needs of the poor.

Most recently, she was the lead for the design and implementation of the Citi Foundation/USAID/SEEP Energy and Microfinance Research initiative, and the findings were published in 2007. Since 1996, Morris has served as a senior consultant for the United Nations Development Programme in the sustainable energy program. Her work at UNDP focuses on technical and programmatic support for countries seeking to advance energy as a means for poverty reduction. She has served on UNDP's External Advisory Group on Environment and Energy since 2007. Morris began her career in clean energy working for the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.

In the early part of her career, she worked as a Science Advisor to the U.S. Congress and as an exploration geophysicist for Texaco. Read more »
